Would “acquired situational narcissism” have derailed the Collins submarine software project ?

By admin · September 9, 2010 · Filed in Day Trading Software · 4 Comments »

The Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) is a systemic, all-pervasive condition, very much like pregnancy: either you have it or you don’t. Once you have it, you have it day and night, it is an inseparable part of the personality, a recurrent set of behavior patterns.

Recent research (1996) by Roningstam and others, however, shows that there is a condition which might be called "Transient or Temporary or Short Term Narcissism" as opposed to the full-fledged version. Even prior to their discovery, "Reactive Narcissistic Regression" was well known: people regress to a transient narcissistic phase in response to a major life crisis which threatens their mental composure.

Reactive or transient narcissism may also be triggered by medical or organic conditions. Brain injuries, for instance, have been known to induce narcissistic and antisocial traits and behaviors.

But can narcissism be acquired or learned? Can it be provoked by certain, well-defined, situations?

Robert B. Millman, professor of psychiatry at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical School thinks it can. He proposes to reverse the accepted chronology. According to him, pathological narcissism can be induced in adulthood by celebrity, wealth, and fame.

The "victims" – billionaire tycoons, movie stars, renowned authors, politicians, and other authority figures – develop grandiose fantasies, lose their erstwhile ability to empathize, react with rage to slights, both real and imagined and, in general, act like textbook narcissists.

But is the occurrence of Acquired Situational Narcissism (ASN) inevitable and universal – or are only certain people prone to it?

It is likely that ASN is merely an amplification of earlier narcissistic conduct, traits, style, and tendencies. Celebrities with ASN already had a narcissistic personality and have acquired it long before it "erupted". Being famous, powerful, or rich only "legitimized" and conferred immunity from social sanction on the unbridled manifestation of a pre-existing disorder. Indeed, narcissists tend to gravitate to professions and settings which guarantee fame, celebrity, power, and wealth.

As Millman correctly notes, the celebrity’s life is abnormal. The adulation is often justified and plentiful, the feedback biased and filtered, the criticism muted and belated, social control either lacking or excessive and vitriolic. Such vicissitudinal existence is not conducive to mental health even in the most balanced person.

The confluence of a person’s narcissistic predisposition and his pathological life circumstances gives rise to ASN. Acquired Situational Narcissism borrows elements from both the classic Narcissistic Personality Disorder – ingrained and all-pervasive – and from Transient or Reactive Narcissism.

Celebrities are, therefore, unlikely to "heal" once their fame or wealth or might are gone. Instead, their basic narcissism merely changes form. It continues unabated, as insidious as ever – but modified by life’s ups and downs.

In a way, all narcissistic disturbances are acquired. Patients acquire their pathological narcissism from abusive or overbearing parents, from peers, and from role models. Narcissism is a defense mechanism designed to fend off hurt and danger brought on by circumstances – such as celebrity – beyond the person’s control.

Social expectations play a role as well. Celebrities try to conform to the stereotype of a creative but spoiled, self-centered, monomaniacal, and emotive individual. A tacit trade takes place. We offer the famous and the powerful all the Narcissistic Supply they crave – and they, in turn, act the consummate, fascinating albeit repulsive, narcissists.

Christians: I want to build a software program or website for the christian community? Any ideas?

By admin · September 8, 2010 · Filed in Day Trading Software · 8 Comments »

I am a born-again Christian and a programmer by trade. Christians are finding many creative ways to use technology these days. I want to build something that would benefit the Christian community. Any ideas?

If you are a programmer or web designer or graphic artist and would like to partner with me on something, let me know.

If you have a great idea but don’t know how to build software/websites, I can partner with you to make it a reality. Just share your thoughts with me.

Serious answers only please.
I really like the idea of a Christian version of Y!A. I’m wondering if Yahoo will eventually separate out different categories under the R & S Section.

The bible verse look up thing is great, but then I would need to type the entire bible into a database. And I would only be able to use translations that were in the public domain. I think e-sword, biblegateway.com, and biblos.com have cornered this market unfortunately.

All the ideas are great, please keep them coming :)

Should I change my PSU?

By admin · September 7, 2010 · Filed in Day Trading Software · 7 Comments »

Hi, I have a comp with specs like this

Core 2 Duo e8400
2×1GB Corsair Dominator PC8500
MB ASUS P5KPLCM
VGA HIS ATI HD 4650 512 MB
HDD SATA II 7200 RPM 500GB
4 USB Devices
Might add 1-2 more 1TB SATA II HDD and an optic drive in the near future.
Oh and not to mention a 2nd monitor for trading purposes. (the Graphic card has 2 DVI outputs)

Main uses is for online trading, office software, browsing, multimedia, and mid level gaming, not overclocked, but almost always on (20hrs/day) because I’m actively downloading movies (hence the HDDs in the future)

I’m using a cheap casing stock PSU which is a 380W Simbadda I don’t even know the true power output. I’ve found a website to count my power usage and it shows at least 255 Watts.

Asus PCProbe Shows CPU voltage as follows at idle times

V Core 1.15V
+3.3 : 3.28v
+5 : 5.07V
+12 : 11.77V

But sometimes the +12 might reach 11.63 when at heavy load, is this normal? what is the good value for the above voltages?

Should I change my PSU to stabilize the voltage output? I haven’t got any problems like BSOD or crashes or resets yet, I’m looking at a corsair 400W PSU, will this be sufficient?

Thanks.

Stock Market Video – Outlook for the Week Ahead – 6/6/10 – Part One

By admin · September 6, 2010 · Filed in Day Trading Software · No Comments »

We just got through another week of intense volatility and crazy trading and in the video I look at the issues we are facing right now. We did see a follow-through day on Wednesday, but for various reasons (all discussed within), that FTD seems completely dead in the water to me as of now. Cash remains the best place to be and patience remains key. With volatility remaining high and news remaining very imprortant (see Friday’s action as a prime example), it is difficult to make any moves outside of an intraday time-frame. Yes, it is boring to do nothing, but trading isn’t about the excitement, it’s really about doing what’s right. Sometimes it is boring

Home Networking?

By admin · September 6, 2010 · Filed in Day Trading Software · 2 Comments »

I have used a cross cable to connect my laptop to desktop, the desktop is connected to Broadband connection. Using Windows XP Home networking, I configured everything. My Internet connection was working fine with my Home networking for laptop routed thru desktop connection.

Today I am not able to connect to Internet from laptop. But my network is fine. I can share files between the computers.

I can dial-up the ADSL connection thru my laptop successfully and connect to the internet provider. But the internet Explorer is not identifying the connection. I tried with opera also, and its too not working.

But I have a trading software, this is working FINE with the connection in my laptop thru desktop.

Few days before I tried to connect my laptop to my mobile phone. Is it because of this I am not able to connect?

If I connect the DSL connection directly to laptop, the internet is working fine. But it is not connecting thru the desk top.

Please help me.
