What should I do about my internship, they are giving me busy work?
I have been interning at a commodities trading office for 6 wks. I was working P/T but they asked me to start coming after school, so now I work 11 hours 3 days a week, and 6 hours 2 days a week. I am a college student and I want to learn on my internship. I told them this at the beginning. There is one other intern, and he is always given work to do. Real work, using accounting programs, etc. I am given menial tasks like filing, sorting my boss’s old personal mail into folders, "organizing" junk. I had to ask repeatedly to be trained on the software, and my boss hesitatingly allowed it. Once I learned it, he would not let me apply my skills. Instead, I was back to organizing his junk mail and sitting around miserably for up to 11 hours a day. The other intern has been there as long as I have but he never does clerical work.
I am going to talk to my boss tomorrow morning and let him know I would like some real work or I will cut my hours down as I am not benefiting from sitting at my desk from 8 AM to 7 PM with no structured tasks. I dont even know what the point is, I ask him everyday for work and he just points to piles of his personal mail and asks me to sort them. The highlight of my day is usually pulling up directions online for my boss or being allowed to make a copy – wow!
